Off to the east – 27 March 2023

Not the Far East, just following the Forth.

It was a lovely day. In fact it was just as the weather fairies had predicted, bright, clear and cold. Just 0.2ºc above zero when Scamp was making the breakfast.

We decided we wouldn’t waste any time, we just drove over to Aberdour in Fife. The last time we’d been there was in January last year and it had been bright, clear and cold then too. After a bit of indecision Scamp remembered the street we needed to go down that would take us to the Silver Sands that Aberdour is famous for. I remembered the big, almost empty car park that those in the know use. We parked there and walked down to the sandy beach.

Scamp had been intending to walk the shore path to Burntisland, but instead we found ourselves following our noses and discovered not one, but two lighthouses, what looked like a gun emplacement from WW1 or WW2 we weren’t sure. The other thing we found was a memorial to Wee Alfy. Not much more information, except a plaque with “In Loving Memory of Wee Alfy 1986-2004” and an engraved picture of a leaping fish. It was on a sturdy table that looked as if it had been used for a barbecue and was built on a concrete and steel frame.

We walked back to the path that would take us to Burntisland. It was a decent path we were on with a plenty of climbs and then slopes down the other side. Well used too by walkers, joggers and cyclists. Everyone out to make the best of this spring day that was warming up nicely. Well, the path would have taken us to Burntisland if we’d had the time, but after walking for about an hour we stopped for a seat and made the decision to go back, because our destination wasn’t getting any nearer. The path was just as interesting on the way back. We were getting hungry by then and waited in the queue to get a table for lunch at the cafe. Scamp had Tuna & Cheese sandwiches and I had a burger. A bacon and cheese burger. It was truly the worst burger I’ve ever had. The meat itself had been reheated a few times before it came to me. The bacon had been fried to within an inch of its life and the cheese. I hate to think to the torture that had been inflicted on that oily orange slab of bubbling something. Take heed, if you are ever in the Sands Cafe, do yourself a favour. Eat one of your shoes rather than risk the burger. Your stomach will thank you for it. The slice of tomato was the best bit and the chips were excellent. We walked back to the car and realised why it might be worth the £2 to park on the lower car park. That is one long, steep and twisty bit of road.

We drove home via Tesco for milk and bread. Then Scamp wanted to do some deadheading that progressed into pruning and then there were plans to be made for the new peony rose we bought. Later, when the gardening work had been completed we used some of the straw that came with a Golden Anniversary rose to stuff a bird feeder and hung it on the tree in the garden. It was Scamp’s idea after I saw a blackbird with a beak full of twigs and leaves, presumably for nest building. Let’s hope some of the birds can use some of that straw.

PoD turned out to be a landscape shot taken on our walk to Burntisland.

Tomorrow Scamp is intending to have coffee with Isobel and as it’s forecast for rain, I may stay home and do that painting I’ve been dreaming about.

Today the clocks went forward – 26 March 2023

So it must be summer.

It was actually a nice sunny day in the morning and it stayed like that for most of the day. Friday was frantic. Saturday was exhausting. Sunday was going to be relaxing … if we could manage that.

It looked a nice sunny, but the weather app told a different story. Temperature started at 5.3ºc at 9am and didn’t rise much throughout the day.

After our normal Sunday fry-up I took the A7 with the long 105mm macro lens and the strange looking LensBaby. My idea was to go for my normal walk, only using the macro lens. Then change lenses and on the walk back I’d use the macro. As it happened, both lenses worked well with different subjects. PoD went to some wild cherry blossoms that only appeared a day or two ago. It was taken with the LensBaby. The lens has a built in distortion element which creates the swirly pattern round the sharp central area. There, I knew you were dying to know how it was done!

When I came home we shared the last scone with jam and clotted cream. Absolutely delicious, but it’s giving me heartburn now. If that’s the price I’ve got to pay, I’ll buy another bottle of Gaviscon!

Dinner tonight was yesterday’s cooked chicken marinated in its own juices and added to a Tarka Daal from theSpice Tailor range. It wasn’t very filling and it just didn’t work. I don’t think we’ll have it again. We will, however have more scones with jam and clotted cream! Thank you Canute.

Tomorrow we might have to go shopping.

Recovery – 25 March 2023

A day to recover from yesterday’s excesses.

Yes, a day to recover from yesterday’s excesses, and also to recover from the morning’s dance class!

Drove through a fair bit of traffic this morning to get to Brookfield for today’s class. It started with a couple of easy sequence dances then it was into the Foxtrot. Suddenly my mind went blank. Thankfully Scamp was there to whisper the count and the next steps that were coming up. Stumbled through it without too much trouble, but I wouldn’t call it elegant. On Strictly it looks so smooth and classy. That’s all a con. It takes a lot of skill to get to that stage. Well, it takes me a long time to get to that stage.

Next another sequence dance to get our confidence back and to clear the Slow Foxtrot out of our heads, because next up was Jive. Scamp has been working at the jive steps and the different moves that make them up. She has this ability to remember sequences of moves and fit them together in the correct timing. I have difficulty remembering g the moves themselves. The jive we’re doing now seems to bear very little resemblance to what Michael taught. The footwork is different, the hand and arm choreography is also different. I made a mess of it and I know it. I can only apologise to Scamp because I feel I’m wasting her time. It will get better, I know that, but it doesn’t come easy to me.

Worse was yet to come, because next was Quickstep and I was ready for it … except this was a different quickstep routine. Not the one we’d worked on for months and had it almost perfect. This one had Fishtails in it. It took me months to master fishtails with Michael, but I must remember that Stewart & Jane are much better teachers that Michael & AnneMarie. We danced our almost perfect quickstep instead of the new one. We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.

The drive home was a nightmare. Juggling with lane changes to find the best route through the traffic. In the end we weren’t all that much later than a normal Saturday, but it felt like we were.

I went for a walk in St Mo’s in the afternoon, taking the A7 with the LensBaby and an old Zenit lens, a Helios 44. The results were better than I anticipated. It’s weird working with a totally manual lens like the Helios. PoD was a shot taken with the LensBaby of a whin bush.

I finally went not the chat line for my internet provider and the person on the other end talked me through the installation of the SSL. Thankfully that should be me sorted until next year, all being well.

Dinner tonight was roast chicken and roast veg. Very nice indeed. I really enjoyed it.

We have no plans for tomorrow yet.

Happy Birthday Scamp – 24 March 2023

A busy day, but a great one.

Today was Scamp’s birthday, a big birthday. It started with breakfast in bed as befitted the Birthday Girl. Then it was time to get dressed and face the day.

There were cards to open and parcels to unpack. I became doorman and brought in the parcels that delivery men asked me to sign for, lots of them. Most amazing being an enormous bouquet of flowers. I do believe the birthday girl was overwhelmed by it all. There was paper and cardboard boxes everywhere. Eventually everything calmed down and we went out to lunch.

It wasn’t a posh lunch, just a normal(ish) Friday afternoon outing to The Cotton House, or go-to Chinese/Thai restaurant a couple of miles down the road. Typically, we had our usual choices from the menu. Scamp had Thai Spring Rolls, followed by Chicken Chow Mein. I had Chicken Noodle Soup and Salt & Chilli Chicken with Noodles. No tea or coffee, just the bill, please. Food was just as lovely as usual.

Instead of driving home, we travelled on to Torwood Garden Centre to get some solar powered lights for the garden. Scamp had said a few weeks ago that she’d like garden lights as a birthday present, so today she got to choose them. We also got a new watering can and a peony rose for me.

Since we were only halfway to the Kelpies, it seemed like a good idea to just drive there so Scamp could tell them all about her birthday so far. We took a rather strange route to get there, but in the end we found Helix Park where the Kelpies live. As usual, I took loads of photos and one of them got PoD. It was a lovely day with blue skies, but later as we were just deciding to go to the cafe for a coffee, there was a sharp shower of rain. After coffee and more photos, we said cheerio to Baron and Duke and drove back home, just managing to avoid the worst of the rush hour.

There was a card on the mat when we got home to say that a parcel was waiting for Scamp at the Post Office. I checked the time it closed and I had just enough time to go there and collect the parcel. Of course it was another birthday parcel.

Later in the evening we had a three way Zoom call from Hazel, Jamie and Neil. Simonne had been in hospital to get her tonsils removed and Jamie was waiting to see if she would get out tonight or not. It was a good call, even if Simonne was absent. Lots of stuff talked about and plans were made for later in the year. Hey, but you know all this. We used up almost our whole hour of air time. Thank you all for organising that.

Tonight (or should I say yesterday night, since you’ll know this was a catch-up) we had an early night. Too much excitement and planning for two bears of little brain.

Tomorrow we’re hoping to dance in the morning and relax for the rest of the day.

Dancin’ – 23 March 2023

We went dancin’ today.

Drove through torrential rain to get to the wee hall in the south of Paisley.

There was a good mix of music, as usual and dancing started as usual, with a Waltz. Actually we did quite well with it. I don’t know why, perhaps it was because we were relaxed and weren’t out to prove anything. Of course I made mistakes, but not too many. We danced a few sequence dances, it took me a while to get to grips with a couple of the less common ones, but Scamp was there whispering the next steps. We danced a Social Foxtrot a Cha-Cha a Line Dance and a couple of Quicksteps. We also managed to dance the quickstep for almost a full track.

As usual, we left fairly early, just after 3pm and it was an easy run home, taking the longer but easier M74 option. So nice to always be moving from entering the M77 to leaving the M73.

I dropped Scamp off and then drove to Tesco to try to get grapefruit for Scamp and get petrol for the blue car. I didn’t get the grapefruit and I was driving out of Tesco when I realised that I hadn’t got the petrol. Parking is getting tight again in our street and it was good to park the car and then get my camera and go for a walk. I walked round St Mo’s and took some boring shots of a fence post with nails hammered into it. Then I crossed the road and found out that M&S didn’t have grapefruit either. Luckily Aldi did and I got two then walked back home in the gathering gloom. That’s where I saw the daffodils. They made such a bright spot in a, now, dull day. It wasn’t until I started processing them that I noticed the amount of grit and dust on them. That’s what you get when you try to grow flowers beside a busy road.

We may go for lunch tomorrow.

Out on the town – 22 March 2023

Scamp was out on the town with the rest of the witches. Ladies only!

Scamp went in to Glasgow on the bus. I offered to give her a run in, but she was determined to go alone. I stayed home until I was sure that she was on the bus, then I grabbed my camera bag and headed off to …

Finally I got parked, and just outside the house for the first time this week. Had a quick coffee and a roll ’n’ cheese for a belated lunch then over to St Mo’s where I just missed the best of the good light, which I needed for a planned Cladonia photo. Instead I found a couple of sprigs of heather which filled the bill and the frame quite well. They became PoD.

Dinner for one tonight was mince ’n’ tatties, and since Scamp was off on a ‘jolly’ with the witches, I managed to make myself without any mistakes or burnt pots. When Scamp came home I checked that I had indeed followed the proper procedure and was rewarded with a backhanded compliment “It’s mince. You can’t go wrong with mince.”. I could. I’m sure I could go very wrong with mince, but I didn’t today and the mince ’n’ tatties was scoffed while Scamp told me about her day.

Glad she had a good day with good friends who look after each other.

Tomorrow we’re hoping to go dancin’.

Colzium – 21 March 2023

It was much better day than yesterday, a day to go for a walk.

Scamp suggested we walk around Colzium. I thought that was a good choice. It’s a circular path or to be more correct it’s a collection of intersecting circular paths that allow you to take as long or as short a walk as you see fit, or that you feel fit enough to walk!

The first problem was that the road we usually take was closed today so we had to weave our way through the traffic calming single lanes through Croy, but it did us to Colzium Estate.

Just for a change we didn’t aim for the big car park with the pot holes that are ‘going to be repaired’. The question is “When?”. Instead we parked in among the trees in a much smaller car park, but one without pot holes.

We set off up the hill and met a couple coming the other way. They warned us that if we were heading for the cafe, we were out of luck. A waitress had spilled hot soup down her leg, so they had closed the cafe for the day while the ambulance people dealt with the casualty. We had both been intending going to the cafe on our way back, but we were going to be disappointed. Instead we plodded on and up the long curving driveway that used to bring the posh folk to the Big House. We followed the road round the back of the estate and on to the path through the woodland and out at the bridge over the Colzium burn which was on the way to being a raging torrent today. A few photos later we started down the other side and I saw an opportunity in a view over a mossy dry-stane dyke to the farmlands over to the east. Nice framing from an old beech tree and I had the makings of a PoD. We followed the route of the burn down to the road then back to the car. A decent 2.5mile walk on a warm spring day. Not to be sniffed at.

We drove home by the old road that climbs through a narrow gorge in woodland then follows a burn to Dullatur. From there it’s a boring drive through half a dozen roundabouts to Tesco and the makings of lunch. Scrambled egg for Scamp and Cheese for me, served on a well fired roll.

I did think of taking a walk round St Mo’s, but instead inspected my photos and decided I had enough for a PoD which turned out to be that mossy dry-stane dyke. Besides, I knew that a parcel had been winging its way from Darn Sarf and would arrive between 3 and 4pm. Scamp was settled to do some ironing, so I got to the door when the DPD bloke knocked and the parcel was disappeared, as if by magic.

Jackie sent us a link to an MP4 file with all the photos of Wee Jaki’s wedding. Some lovely photos there. Thank you Jackie. Scamp has the file now too.

Dinner tonight was Pasta Amatriciana (bacon, tomatoes, shallot, spring onion and a pinch of chilli flakes). Afterwards we watched a quite entertaining Celebrity Bake Off. Don’t know what they will do when Matt Lucas leaves.

That was about it for today. Scamp is intending going to Glasgow tomorrow for a Witches Day. I’m intending painting, if I can get my backside in gear.

Up in the sky – 20 March 2023

We didn’t quite make it up above the clouds where there is always a blue sky, but we were close.

Today we were going for lunch in Glasgow. We walked to Condorrat to get the bus, because drink would be taken.

It was good to get someone else to do the driving, even if it was a ramshackle bus we were on. Every few stops it would give itself a shrug and I was wondering if it would get going again, but it did and it got us in to town a lot quicker than the sluggish X3 would.

It was a dismal day and we were heading out to alongside the River Clyde on an X19. Another case of the “X” not meaning eXpress, but it was an interesting journey, especially when the bus changed lanes going over the “Squinty Bridge”. Oh, it was strange to be driving on the right hand lane and then crossing back to the left lane when we were across. It was also a pain, because we’d missed our stop and had to walk back of the Squinty Bridge in the rain to find our destination. Thankfully we didn’t have to change lanes.

We walked straight in to the Red elevator of the Radisson Red boutique hotel and took it up to the 9th floor and got a table. It wasn’t right at the window, but we still had a decent view. Scamp had booked it a few weeks ago and we were both impressed with the food and drink, although I only had a beer. Scamp had Strawberry Fields Forever which was a take on a Strawberry Daiquiri. Maybe just a bit too sweet. For food we shared Salmon Teriyaki, Spicy Chicken Bao Buns and Cauliflower Pakora which had the strangest sour coriander dip. Strange but absolutely lovely. I didn’t like the salmon, but that’s just me. Scamp said the spicy chicken was too strong for her taste, but we both agreed the cauliflower pakora was excellent. The view was great, but it would have been so much better if the drizzle hadn’t dulled everything down. There was no attempt to rush us through our lunch and we both had coffee afterwards. It was a lovely lunch and I think we’ll be back, but only if it’s another “buy one, get one free” offer.

We walked back to the bus stop and got an X19 back into town. Scamp and I both had things we were looking for. I was looking for water soluble graphite pencils to try on watercolour paper. Scamp was buying prezzies.

We got the X3 back home because although it’s slow, we don’t have to walk too far to get home.

PoD was a two frame panorama created in Lightroom and tweaked in Photoshop.

We had a really good day. Good food, interesting food too and great company. It will be better in the summer I’m sure.

We have no plans as yet for tomorrow.

Mum’s Day – 19 March 2023

I really should have brought Scamp her breakfast in bed for Mother’s Day, but it was her turn to do breakfast.

Spoke to Hazy in the morning and heard how the two of them are coping with Covid. It seems that neither of them are too bothered about it. Of course this was a Mother’s Day call, so I gave them both space.

We returned to a traditional Sunday fry-up breakfast. We’ve been eating healthy and alternative for a couple of weeks now, but today was back to sausage, egg and bacon with half a slice of dumpling to offset the protein. Scamp was more veggy with mushrooms, tomatoes, egg and the other half of the dumpling. Sometimes you just have to go with your gut feeling (pun intended).

We discussed a few options for dinner and eventually settled on a posh fish finger thingy which Scamp thought would be just the thing. That meant we needed some ingredients from ‘the shops’. So we booted up and dressed for the day and walked down to M&S to get the fish and some herbs. Then we walked home and as so often, I took a detour to St Mo’s. The frogs were having a day off. I suppose it’s allowed, because they’ve been ‘working’ hard for the last few days. So it was a wee weed that got PoD after it had been washed clean in a bucket of ON1 and dried off in Lightroom so that it was shiny and clean and also because I liked it.

Spoke to Jamie later and heard about their trip to Trinidad. Such a hard job to have to go to the beach every second day or something like it. You both deserved a bit of ‘Me’ time. Glad you enjoyed it.

I thought the posh fish finger thingy was spicy hot but just not too much. Scamp thought it needed more salt. Foodies, they’re never satisfied.

Tomorrow we’re hoping to go to Glasgow.

Dancin’ again – 18 March 2023

Back to the “bump and grind”. More of which later, but not what you think!

Drove through busy traffic to Brookfield and we started with the Catherine waltz. It looked more difficult than it was and by the end of the half hour we had it, more or less. “More or less” covers a multitude of sins. Next we went straight into a Jive routine. Technically it was a different jive from what we normally do. We learned “Glasgow Jive” which is based on six beats but they were teaching “Ballroom Jive” which is based on four beats. That doesn’t seem like much, but it made a big difference to us. Eventually we did work out what was going on and on the way home we realised that most of what we were being taught, we’d already done, and that includes the “Hip Bumps.” No grinds though, at least not yet!

We’d both forgotten just how exhausting jive can be, so we were relieved to find that the next item on the ‘menu’ was a much more sedate Slow Foxtrot. Still complicated, especially in what they call the ‘back end’ which we think of as the second half, but much slower than the jive.

A couple of tracks of sequence dance and we were done for the day. That was exhausting, but once we’d looked over the videos of the jive, it wasn’t really more difficult than the ones we’d done years ago in Blackfriars with Michael, just different.

Drove home through more traffic than a normal Saturday, but managed to take the M74 turn off and ended up arriving home in about 45mins which is good for the return journey on a Saturday.

After a quick lunch I chopped up some half price tomatoes, two onions and a red pepper, loaded them into a baking tray, sprinkle them with basil and roasted them in the oven (gas 6) for an hour. Decanted the lot into a pot, added a tin of tomatoes, a litre of hot water and a chicken stock pot and cooked it for 30mins. Blitzed the lot in two stages in the blitzy thing (liquidiser) and let it settle for a while.

I went for a walk in St Mo’s with the little A6000 and a 55-200mm lens. It’s not a brilliant lens, but it’s the longest one I’ve got that actually works on the Sonys. I got a few photos of the host of frogs that have now invaded the ponds. One of them made PoD. I liked the reflection of it in the murky pond.

Dinner tonight was tomato soup with a baked potato. Not elegant, but warm and filling. Watched the qualifying for the Saudi Arabian GP. I think Scamp was a bit disappointed when Verstappen’s car died on him and he was demoted to the back of the pack. It will be interesting to see how long it will take him to get back to the podium tomorrow.

The dancing, but especially the Jive took a lot out of us today. We had an early night, and that’s why this is the second catch-up in a row. Thank you Hazy for getting back to me. I hadn’t found that page before, although most of the links lead back to pages I’d already found. I think my plan is to let the SSL expire and then start a new one from Namecheap this time. At least that should be an easier way to go.

No plans for tomorrow which is Mother’s Day, of course.
