An improving prospect – 5 November 2024

A much nicer day than we’ve had of late. I think the sunshine helped greatly.

After a lazy morning, again, we went out for a walk in Drumpellier woods. We had to drive there first, of course, but it’s not far and if you ignore the obvious walk round the loch, the woods are lovely.

The sun had been bright in the morning, but by the time we got to the park it was dulling down a lot. It didn’t stop us, because we were out for a walk. Just five minutes into the walk I got PoD which was a wide shot of a swan hustling for food near the seated area where lots of folk feed them. I apologised to the swan because I’d nothing it would want to eat, but I took a couple of photos of it anyway. I was shooting into the sun, but although out of the camera the photo was a bit rough, some gentle persuasion brought out the colours in the water and the distant trees. We walked on.

I was hoping to see some deer, but it’s a long time since I’ve seen any in the park and I was disappointed today.. Drumpellier’s woodlands are a marvellous place to walk through. So many different paths to try out. We didn’t actually choose any of them, but have earmarked one at least for a day with more time on our hands. Instead, we walked round behind the biggest woodland and the sun returned to light our way. Eventually we came to one of the tarmacked roads and as we walked round the loch and back to the car the sun started to sink towards the trees. The days are feeling a lot shorter since the clocks went back.

Back home I joined battle with MacOS Ventura again. There was a large chunk of storage space just sitting there with no reason for its existence, so I tried to remove it, but it was outside my knowledge, so I formatted the entire SSD and started again. After about three hours and umpteen password insertions later the system was working again and had plenty empty storage space again. Hopefully it will run sweeter for a few months now.

Working my way through the intricacies of Ventura was difficult today with all the Woooshes and Bangs from Guy Fawkes Night. I must be getting old, because I have no time for these noise makers anymore. The rapid bangs of the explosions sound like machine gun fire. Folk with PTSD must have a terrible time during November.

Dinner was a pair of old favourites.Scamp had Bubble & Squeak and I had Cabbage, Bacon and Potatoes. Very nice.

Watched Bake Off and were not surprised by the person who left.

I’m intending to phone Val tomorrow to arrange a coffee day. Scamp has the dreaded Dentist!

Two go for a walk – 11 December 2023

The morning broke with the promise of a fine day, but would it last?

As we watched the clouds break and the sun begin to shine, the decision was made. We would go for a walk. I chose Drumpellier as the likely destination. I know Scamp likes walking in the woods and I do too. It’s usually a place where I can be sure of getting a photo or two, so suited and booted for a walk in the woods, we set off.

By around 10.30 we were walking between the two ponds that make up Lochend Loch. We were walking counterclockwise today, against the normal flow of pedestrians. We took our usual route, choosing the second path that offered us an entrance to the woods. It’s a long straight path that takes you deep into the woodland, then there’s an almost 180º turn and another slightly shorter path before we turned off as we usually do to climb up the long slope to the crest of the hill then down the other side. Every now and again we’d come across a handful of seeds scattered by someone on the side of the path with magpies and the occasional crows making a breakfast of them. We’ve often seen these seeds and wondered if it’s just folk like us, or maybe folk working in the park who put these seeds down.

There are a myriad of paths and trails all the way through the woodland. Some are obviously deer trails and some look as if they are ramblers trails, but we generally keep to the main paths and each of us has their favourites. Today we walked a shorter and less strenuous route than normal, then I suggested we add on a walk round the cricket ground. It’s strange to think that an industrial place like Coatbridge would have a cricket ground in a corner of the woodland, but it’s true. We walked back down the road that would take us back to the loch and from there, back to the car park.

We needed some ‘messages’ and I suggested Morrisons as a change from Tesco. That’s how we came home with three bags full of stuff. Scamp was delighted to find that Morrisons stocked her old favourite fruity sauce. I was delighted to find a bargain bottle of whisky. We both bought more than we really needed, but a change is as good as a rest, some say and we needed a change from Tesco.

I finally bit the bullet and drove up to the town centre to get my hair cut. I swear it took the girl less than five minutes to give me a number 3 on the sides and a number 4 on the top. Then trim my terrifying eyebrows. Worth the £7.90 she asked for, so I gave her a tenner!

While I was out, Scamp had put her fancy new Christmas lights round the wee tree Jamie and Simonne brought from their garden. The clever thing about them is that you set the start time for them, then they stay on for six hours and automatically switch off after that time.  So smart!

I got a few photos today, but my favourite, and PoD, was a view over Lochend Loch with the sky reflected in the still water.

Cleverly, Scamp had turned the chicken stock from yesterday into a small pot of soup by adding more veg. That was dinner tonight with an M&S pizza to fill a wee space if we needed it.

Tomorrow I think Scamp may be meeting June, Shona and Ian. I’m intending to stay at home incase a parcel arrives.

Old friends and Drumpellier – 3 August 2023

Scamp suggested a walk in Drumpellier. It had been ages since we’d been there, so I agreed.

I know that face. We were just getting out of the car when I saw Brian Gregg walking along with his wee boy. He seemed surprised to see me and asked “Do you come here often?” When I said we did, he looked a bit disappointed. Probably thinking “Am I going to meet them here every week?” Then he relaxed a bit and told me about his near misses looking for a permanent position at a school nearer to home. Also about dodgy interviews in North Lanarkshire. No great surprise there. Everyone has stories about questionable tactics in NLC. However he eventually got a placement nearby and seemed to be enjoying it. That is if you can enjoy the last few days of your annual holiday. He was heading home and we were just starting our walk.

Today we were going anti-clockwise round the loch. That’s our usual direction. We’d chosen one of the side paths and were just at the point where we could lengthen the walk or keep it short when the rain started. Not heavy real, just a drizzle, but enough to make ripples on the standing water beside the path. I suggested we take the shorter route just in case it came on heavier. We followed the path for a while then Scamp suggested we take another side path, up a hill. We walked up clambering over tree roots and round established trees. When we got to the top the path turned and went back down the hill in a slightly different direction, bringing us back to the path we’d just left. When we came out of the cover of the trees the rain had gone, so we walked up the hill to the cricket pitch. A cricket pitch in Coatbridge who would have guessed that? We sat for a while there then walked back down again. It was just that sort of day!

Back beside the loch we went to the cafe to get lunch. Roll ’n’ Tattie Scone for Scamp and the ubiquitous Roll ’n’ Sausage for me both on dry rolls – no butter. A cup of boiling hot coffee for me and peppemint tea for Scamp. Then back home to get some fruit and sweeties at Tesco.

PoD was a photo of an oak branch with a single red leaf among the green. It made me think, is this autumn coming already? Surely not.

Scamp made dinner which was the same as yesterday with a Wagu burger in place of the bacon and an omelette for her. Burger was ok. I bought it in Waitrose the other day because it was cheap. Glad I didn’t pay full price.

Scamp is out early tomorrow to get her tooth repair completed. She is expecting to get the crown fitted after having waited quite some time. We may go out to lunch afterwards if the dentist says that’s ok!

Outside toilet – 1 May 2023

Today the weather fairies got it wrong. They predicted a dull day and it turned out bright and sunny.

I have a lot to do on the first day of the month. Screensavers to be created, files and folders to be moved, folders of pictures to be backed up and then rejected photos to be deleted. Today was no different. Eventually, when all was running normally again, we decided we’d better go out and make the best of the day before it all slipped away.

Scamp wanted to go to Drumpellier for a walk through the woods, and so did an awful lot of folk on this surprisingly sunny May Day. All around us seemed to be dark and cloudy, but for once we were sitting in the sweet spot, at least we were when we finally found a parking place.

Off we trudged on the conveyer belt with all the other folk walking round this big pond. But we knew we could get off the travelator and into the woods. It’s good to see the colour returning to the trees after so many weeks of bare branches. There were a lot fewer folk on these paths through the woods and at times we seemed to be the only people walking these pathways. Eventually we found our way back to the main circuit at the far end of the loch. I had taken a few shots in the woods, but not very many. We walked round to the ice cream van and had a cone each. With raspberry, but without a flake. Scamp was quite firm about that. No 99s today, even if it is a bank holiday.

We sat on a bench, eating our cones and watching an asian bloke with two little girls in tow, in tow, but not under control. Poor man was run ragged chasing one then the other to keep them from falling into the loch while the girls just seemed to ignore him, so that they could throw stones in the water. Just weans having fun and taking more than a little leeway with their dad.

As we were walking back to the car I saw a photo opportunity with three gulls on the big Whale’s Tail sculpture that sits out in the water. I climbed over a couple of rocks and sat down on one to get a nice low viewpoint for the shot across the water, when I heard a woman’s voice behind me saying “What’s he doing?” Another woman answered, “I think he’s doing the toilet!” Then a man’s voice said “He’s taking photographs!” Oh, the ignominy of it. To be thought to be performing your bodily functions outside in Coatbridge. I’d never live it down! However, it did make me smile. “Doing the toilet”, indeed! No wonder photogs get a bad reputation.

We drove home before the polis came. After a late lunch and after checking that I did indeed have a PoD, I set to work on the first sketch for a long while for Every Day in May, or EDiM for short. The first one is complete and can be seen on Flickr and Facebook. It was tough going. This was the best of three attempts.

Today’s prompt was A Waffle.
I don’t eat waffles as a rule, although I can be enticed into having one when we’re on holiday.
Today’s sketch was of what I would have if I did eat waffles. My toppings would be blueberries and strawberries, plus maybe some melted chocolate, just to make it little bit less healthy!

Some interesting topics this time round.

Hoping for some more bright sunny weather tomorrow to get out and about in.

At last, a walk in the sunshine – 6 January 2023

Today we managed to go for a walk. It was cold, but it didn’t rain.

We drove to Drumpellier and went for a walk through the woods. Lots of folk out doing just the same thing, although to be honest most of the folk were doing circuits of the pond. Not our idea of fun, now that we’ve discovered the variety of paths through the woodland. Some are official paths, but there are a lot more that are just paths trodden by walking feet and although many are mucky and slippery, they are more interesting than the official paths.

I took a few photos in the woodland, but the best by far was just where we were parked. It was the Whale’s Tail with two gulls landing and one just taking off. Another two gulls were taxiing before take off. The low sun you get at this time of year helped add a bit of contrast to the scene. The finished shot was almost as it came out of the camera.

We need a large wall calendar for the kitchen and when we left Drumpellier we drove to The Fort to see if we could find one. But we came home empty handed. I’ve an idea where we might find one tomorrow.

Back home I was trying to work out how to use mail merging in MS Word to create a Word document from an Excel sheet. I’d already tried to do the same thing on Pages in the Mac, but it’s really just a toy. Very little practical use. I’m still trying to do it and it still evades me. I know I used to do it regularly in school, but then I was using a PC every day. Macs in general aren’t used for this sort of thing. I found the Avery app really useful for it last year, but that facility is no longer in the app or is so deeply buried that it would take me too long to find it. I’ll keep looking, it’s in there somewhere.

Scamp was ploughing through the holiday companies on the computer looking for somewhere warm for February. After a fair bit of searching and evaluating, I think we can say that we may be going to somewhere warm for a week, all being well. Still nothing booked for the summer, but we have a few possibilities that just need some things confirmed before we make a final decision.

Dinner tonight was a half a pizza each. Actually it was more like two thirds for me and just a third for Scamp. It was washed down with a nice glass of red. Dessert was Scottish Tablet Ice Cream!

Tonight looks wet, but tomorrow, for the most part may remain dry during daylight hours. That’s the best you can ask for. It was good to be out in the sunshine today somewhere that isn’t Cumbersheugh!

Off to see a man about a car – 10 October 2022

Today we sold Scamp’s wee red car

The MOT on Scamp’s car was coming up fast and for weeks we’ve had long discussions about whether to keep it or sell it, and if we sell it, who to? We eventually agreed in the middle of last week to sell it. Actually it was Scamp herself who pushed for selling it, I wanted to put it through a pre-MOT and see what the outcome of that would be although we knew it would need some work done. Anyway, after searching around to see which of the snake oil salesmen was the least dodgy, we finally agreed on We Buy Any Car. Got a price that was far in excess of what it was worth and organised a day to have it surveyed. That day was today and after less than half an hour we walked away without the old red Micra, but with a few quid in the bank, although a good bit less than the first fantasy price we got. We were both fairly happy with the whole procedure. It was as painless as it could be. It is a bit strange looking out the window at the car park and not seeing that wee red motor, but that would have happened sooner or later, anyway.

A coffee and a light lunch to settle us down and reflect on what we’d done. It was the right thing to do and the right time to do it. The rest of the day was waiting for us and it was keeping to the weather fairies promise of a dry day for a change.

We drove to Drumpellier and went for a walk in the trees. It was a bit breezy, but the light was good and lots of folk were out enjoying this little bit of sunshine. Deep in the woods of Drumpellier we came upon a tree with layers of golden leaves. The light was almost perfect and the wide angle lens managed to capture most of the scene, even if it was tearing the image a bit at the edges. I had a PoD. Usually we have an ice cream cone from a van at the park, but there was no van today. That was because, despite the sun, it was quite cold. No, a coffee in the cafe was more realistic today. After that we drove home.

Prompt for today was ‘Crabby’, or to put it into Scots, ‘Crabbit’. I searched Google and found this image, or something like it. It just said “Crabby” to me. Some days it’s just not worth getting up. You just know it’s not going to be sunshine and fun. It’s going to be furballs and frustration. Today was one of those days for Crabby Cat!

Tomorrow may be the second dry day in October, if that’s not pushing it. If it turns out as the weather fairies say, we may go for a walk.

Old Friends – 29 August 2022

We didn’t do much in the morning, but the afternoon was full.

In the morning I saw the “Washing machine is ready to go” message when I went down to make the breakfast, so I switched it on. After breakfast Scamp wanted to go out for messages and I wanted to give my bike the once over, because I’m intending taking it out on Friday with a little bit of luck. The tyres are flat, but what state the inner tubes will be in, I don’t know. I might get round to that tomorrow, but today Scamp returned and saved me from getting my hands dirty.

After lunch I suggested we go for a walk. My offerings were Drumpellier, Auchinstarry for the Forth and Clyde canal or a more gentle Colzium. Drumpellier was our choice, so off we went.

As usual we walked anti-clockwise round the loch, then into the woods, taking it in turns to decide which road to take at each split in the path. It was a really warm day with a bit of cloud cover. We were just coming out of the woods when I saw a woman pushing an older woman in a wheelchair and recognised her voice. It was Morag from school and the older woman was her mum. We met up with her husband just a bit further along the road. We must have stood there for easily three quarters of an hour, just catching up and talking about folk we’d worked with. Funnily enough John and I had done exactly the same thing on Friday night. Morag has gone back to teaching again for half a week after having retired! I don’t know why people do that. Surely they are just taking jobs away from up and coming teachers who really need a job. I’m perfectly happy being retired and being able to live my own life. I’m sure Scamp would say the same thing, even if I do get in the way a lot of the time. We eventually said our “goodbyes” and we strode off, because the ice cream van was beckoning!

Just after getting the cones, I saw the opportunities of a photo with the swans. I handed my cone to Scamp and took a couple of photos of the birds. They weren’t too happy to see me and started hissing, as swans do, probably because I’d woken them up from their afternoon snooze. Two shots was all I risked, then caught up with Scamp again and we scoffed the ice cream, then drove home.

Two photos isn’t really enough for me. I kept my walking boots on and took the A7 out for a walk in St Mo’s where I got another sleepy dragonfly and back in the garden, a bi-coloured dahlia. Strange thing. Most of the flowers on the plant are pale pink, spotted with dark red. Some are plain red, but this one was half and half. Some sort of throwback perhaps. All are available on Flickr, but the swans got PoD.

While I was out, Scamp had been cutting the back garden grass. Hopefully that will be her finished for the year. Depending on the weather, the grass might need one more cut, but equally it might be good enough as it is,

Rather a good Pasta Carbonara tonight using Val’s Italian recipe with two full eggs and one extra yolk, but no cream. Apparently that’s how carbonara should be made.

Tomorrow we’re booked for coffee with Isobel in the morning. The rest of the day is our own.

Walking in the woods – 15 June 2022

We went out early, because the sun was shining. A good decision.

Spoke to Hazy first thing and heard about the predicted temperature down south. I don’t think I’d like to live in that sort of heat. Ok to have it on holiday, but not all the time. However, things seem to be ticking along nicely there and Neil is feeling a bit better.

We were lucky that the DPD man arrived fairly early to pick up a parcel, going to Jamie & Simonne, then Scamp chose today’s destination which was Drumpellier Park. A walk in the woods and an ice cream cone at the finish. It was a lovely morning walking through the trees. Didn’t see any deer today, but lots of squirrels. Lovely light through the trees for me to photograph and the 99 cones were welcome after the walk.

Drove home for lunch and a chance for me to process the morning’s photos, before heading out again to get some more and hopefully a dragonfly or two in St Mo’s. As it happened, a Common Blue damselfly was the best I could find.

Back home, Scamp had cut the front grass while I was off on my safari, and was relaxing in the garden. I decided to join her, she with a Pimms and me with a bottle of beer. Sat and read for an hour or so before processing today’s second lot of photos.

Dinner tonight was a decent paella. I don’t know what I did different this time other than use both green and red peppers instead of just red, but it was that little bit better than my usual version.

PoD was a little Speedwell flower.

Maybe going in to Glasgow tomorrow. Scamp has lunch booked with her pal.
