St Andy’s Day – 30 November 2015

combo-bThe last day of November!  It started with rain, as have most of the days recently.  I had a full agenda today with a trip to Glasgow quite prominent.  I’d decided to go on the bus, thereby saving money since I had all day to go, shop and come back before dinner time.  Scamp was out with Gems singing in the afternoon, so the day was my own.  I wrapped up well and headed off to the bus stop, then remembered that the timetable changed earlier this month and I was now five minutes late for the bus.  Did I dare try to become one of the 700 who daily park at the station, or did I drive in to Glasgow, park in the exorbitant Concert Hall carpark and pay a king’s ransom for the privilege?  A dilemma.  I opted for the train.  Hey, it’s Monday.  Some folk will probably be having a long weekend and not going to work, so the carpark won’t be crammed full with people parking on the verges, in the turning circles and in the flower beds.  Strangely, for once, that’s exactly what happened.  Hunners of spaces.  Well maybe not hunners, but enough.  I got a space easily.  Even better, I got my ticket walked on to the platform and the train appeared.  As if by magic.  Sometimes things just happen for you.

By the time I got to Glasgow the sun had come out, the rain had stopped and the day was looking good.  Dandered through ‘The Toon’ and got what I was looking for, just the essentials.  I also saw some things that I’d like, like a new SSD (not to be confused with an S T D which is a totally different thing … or so I’m told) for the Mac.  Shh, don’t tell The Mac, it’s meant to be a surprise.  It might be its Chrissy Prezzy.  I saw a Sandisk 480GB one for £99 in Maplin and almost bought it, but decided to check on-line to see what price I could get it for there and to read some reviews.  As I thought, Amazon had one for £73.  Same make and same model.  It’s now on the shopping list, along with a new battery for the same unibody device.

In Glasgow I wandered around St Enoch’s Christmas Market.  How much longer will we be able to say ‘Christmas‘ without breaking some EEC law?  It’s ludicrous that we have to change our traditional names because we’re frightened of upsetting some group or other.  Moves are already afoot to change Easter holidays to Spring holidays because it offends some religious groups.  Doesn’t ‘Spring’ holiday offend Wiccans and Neopagans or some other nature loving group?  You can’t win.  Just leave it as it is and if other groups don’t like the word, then they don’t have to use it.  Simples!

Got some photos in and around the St Enoch area.  I’ve been watching the light on the new underground station there and the way it contrasts to the old St Enoch building with the clock tower.  Most impressed with the steel and glass structure.

Quick cup of coffee and a granola from Laboratorio Espresso and got the train home.  Overall a good day, greatly helped by the unexpected ease of parking at the station and by the glorious sunshine.  The down side was having to scrape the windscreen of the car before going out to Salsa tonight.  Oh well, you can’t have it both ways.  I much prefer the clean cold to the miserable rain.

The day that the rains came down – 29 November 2015

ComboThis was yet another day of torrential rain.  We are certainly making up for the Indian summer we enjoyed in September.  Or, maybe it’s just the monsoon season!

Just before lunchtime, the clouds parted, the sun shone and the rain dried up.  I put a pair of wellies on and went for a wade around St Mo’s.  There wasn’t much wildlife in evidence, but the bright directional sun did light up a few things.  The usual clichés like raindrops on oak leaves and see through birch leaves.  The snow on the Meikle Bin gave an interesting landscape shot that looked better in mono than in colour.

After lunch we watched the Andy Murray building the foundations for his startling win which would seal the Davis Cup win for Great Britain.  We should have been watching the final Grand Prix race of the year, but BBC switched the sports round at the last minute and it was only Scamp’s skill with the Tivo box that saved the day … again.  Pity it was such a boring race.

Not long after I got back from my walk, the rain returned with the wind for a while.  The wind is predicted to reduce during the night, but unfortunately the temperature will reduce too and leave us with the prospect of ice and snow tomorrow.  That may make life interesting for Jackie who is staying with us for the next few days and travelling to Embra by train.

Singing in the Rain – 28 November 2015

combo bSitting in Cafe Tabou waiting for our starter listening to an absolute prick shouting across the table to his friend who may not have been deaf to start with, but certainly was now. He also regularly interspersed his monologue with laughing “A HA HA” as if he had read about laughing, but hadn’t actually have heard it before. I think he may have been, or is, a lawyer or some other worthless bastard, but obviously (self)important. The Art Critic quote from Monty Python sprung to mind “… clever people like me, who talk loudly in restaurants …”  Lunch itself was good.  Salad de Chef with kippers and loads of other good stuff followed by Hake for Scamp and Rabbit and Chorizo Ragu for me.

When we left, we went to WH Smith to win our fortune with a couple of Thunderball tickets and bumped into Duncan and Heather.  It’s ages since I’ve seen him and it was really good to catch up.  Twelve months catchup in 30 minutes as Duncan said.

We had already finished our shopping – coffee, tea and cheese, with a trip to M&S for Scamp to pick up any Black Friday Weekend bargains.  She did get one, of course.  We had also stood and watched a trio of youngsters playing on the outdoor stage.  Unlike last year’s, this lot brought a lot of enthusiasm to the gig and didn’t seem at all fazed by it.  At least not until they tried to give out their Facebook website address to the crown, then they became a bit tongue tied.

It was now time to head home through the pouring rain.  Driving home wasn’t much fun through driving rain and sleet, but at least we were warm and dry in the car.  It was one of those occasions when the car was better than the bus.  I couldn’t imagine sitting in a wet jacket and jeans on a cold bus for an hour and a half, then waiting in the rain for another connection.  Nah, driving might have been a pain, but it was better than public transport tonight.

Just a Friday – 27 November 2015

combo2Drizzly rain all day today.  Sorted out the hazel problem first thing.  It was actually sorted last night, well the programming was sorted, it was just the putting into practise that needed to be done today.  Made some bread after that and kept back a pizza sized piece for my dinner tonight.  Scamp was going out for her retirement lunch so it was just dinner for one.

Scamp’s radio which she uses in the mornings wasn’t working and although I had jury rigged a solution of sorts, I decided to get her a new one for the five working days she still needs one for.  First I took her to the restaurant and then I went for a swim.  No gym today, my ankle is too sore.  The pool was brilliant.  Much warmer than the pool in the hotel in Tenerife!  Took in a trip to the sauna and the steam room too.  One girl in the steam room was complaining that there was a lot of steam in the room, she thought it should be dry.  The OTHER   fitness centre she went to had a hot room without all that steam.  I explained to her that the sauna was next door and this was a steam room.  Her next complaint was that the seats were too hard.  Why didn’t they have cushions.  Apparently OTHER fitness centres have soft seats in their hot rooms.  I left her to her complaints.

Soaked Again – 26 November 2015

comboI got up early today, soon after Scamp left for work.  I couldn’t get on to the blog site last night because the server in the US was borked.  When I switched on the computer this morning, everything was back to normal.  The next task was to start getting the pictures organised for my 2016 calendar.  Unfortunately, my hazel (lower case for the prog – Upper Case for the person) skills were lost on the task.  Yes, it worked, but it would have taken until the end of 2016 to get the images arranged the way I wanted them.  I put the rules, because that’s what hazel calls the scripts it uses, on the back burner and went for a walk.

The last time I walked along the old railway I got soaked.  Today started much better, but by the time I got to my usual turning point the rain had changed from an irritating drizzle to a soaking driving rain.  Thankfully, on the way back I had the rain behind me.  Even so, by the time I got back to the car, I was soaked again.  I had intended to go straight in to Glasgow after my walk, but I decided to go home and change.  There’s no point in being uncomfortable when you don’t need to be.

When I got home, I knew exactly how to write the hazel rule.  Of course I didn’t write it down I have found and elegant solution etc as did Fermat before me.  One of these days I’ll learn from my mistakes … maybe.

I parked at the station (which in itself was a minor miracle on a weekday) and got the train in to Glasgow.  The light, while low, was interesting. I bumped into Steve Mooney in John Lewis where he was booking his Black Friday bargain.  We had fallen out before we both retired, but for the five minutes we talked, we were very pleasant to each other.  Meanwhile holding down our real feelings.  That’s how we got on with people isn’t it.  That was about it for the day.  Other than visiting the tiny Laboratorio Espresso for a flat white.  Lovely coffee in a lovely artistic cup.

The Bonny (x2) Banks – 25 November 2015

DSC_4429-Edit- blog--329On paper, this looked like the best day of the week. I thought it would be good to go to Lomond Shores which, although it’s really just a collection of expensive tacky touristy shops, does have Loch Lomond as a backdrop. Today it also had, what must have been the slowest workforce in creation apparently laying down a new pedestrian walkway. This must be a new definition of ‘work‘ and ‘force‘. There was very little work being done and with the minimum of force. The shops seemed to be overloaded with Christlefridge tat. I really can’t stand this nonsense. Buy in cheap crap, stack it high, sell it dear and then sell off what’s left as ‘bargain’ items after the celebrations are over. Bah Humbug.

The upside of the visit was the scenery around the loch itself. With clouds scudding across the sky, the constantly changing light on the hills was fascinating. It was also good to see the seaplane landing on the loch. It must have been a beautiful flight today. One lucky day with the light just right.

The evening was spent trying once again to fix the Finder problem on the Mac. I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it before. If I have, you won’t want to hear about the lack of progress and if I haven’t, I won’t bore you with it. Suffice to say that the search continues.

The Golden Hour – 24 November 2015

comboToday started at 7.00am when I got up to wait for our new dishwasher to be delivered.  These days stores are at pains to offer you an exact delivery window.  Most carriers, like DPD, delivering from the south of England, will give you a 60 minute time slot.  John Lewis, delivering from 15 miles away, give you a 7 HOUR window.  That’s not a delivery window JL, that’s a whole shift I’d lose if I’d been working.  Not really acceptable in this day and age.  As you might have guessed, the delivery was not here until 1.30pm, SIX AND A HALF HOURS after the start time.  I’m beginning to think that JL is living in the past and resting on their laurels (if that isn’t mixing my metaphors).  However, the dishwasher was fitted, tested and the old machine taken away in double quick time.  It’s been tested and it washes dishes.  All is good.

After I had my lunch, the good light was fading and I hadn’t had time to take any photos.  So, it was boots on and a quick walk to St Mo’s in the late afternoon.  I thought I’d missed all, the good light, but luckily there was just a little bit left.  In the gloaming you get some nice reflections on the pond if there’s a decent cloudscape.  I’d brought the Nikon with the 70-300mm today and I thought I also had the ultra-wide 10-20mm Sigma with me, but it turned out I had the kit lens instead.  One of the many great things about Nikon is the quality of the kit lenses.  I read so many people complaining about the poor resolution from their kit lenses and thank the salesman in Jessops (when it was a REAL photo shop, staffed by photographers) 15 years ago who convinced me that it was worth paying that little bit more for a Nikon D70.  He was right, but of course, I always wanted a Nikon from away back in the ’70s when I bought an Olympus OM1 and should really have bought a Nikkormat FT2.  I think from that day on, I aspired to a Nikon.

There was a fair bit of post-processing on the ‘Golden Pond’ shot.  It’s a sort of HDR process, but one that’s done completely within Lightroom.  I found it by accident on the internet in a tutorial by Serge Ramelli. He also has a fair amount of video tutorials on YouTube.  It’s a simple technique and so much better than using progs like Photomatix because it’s infinitely adjustable and seems to produce less digital noise than other ‘real’ HDR progs.  Anyway, it works for me and it also works with Jpeg format files, which Photomatix doesn’t do.  Technospeak rant over.

I want to go back to Tenerife – 23 November 2015

comboToo much ‘footering‘ today. There’s a good Scottish word for you ‘Footering‘. Just messing around without getting anything done, that’s footering. I had hoped for some dry weather in the morning so I could get out and get some photos, but from early morning it was drizzly rain.
Eventually I got myself organised and went out for a walk with the Oly to St Mo’s in the rain.

I’d seen the armchair yesterday and set it as my target today. Strangely, the weather was ideal for what I wanted to do with the chair. I wanted it to look grungy and it does.

I came upon Mr Grey hunting in the pool and started stalking him. Unfortunately he was watching me all the time. I got a few shots of him, but wasn’t happy with them at all. It was only when he flew off I got a decent shot of him.

I went to the gym and the pool in the afternoon. It looks like the gym will be out of commission for the month of December and that’s only a week away, so for a month it will be swim only and the pool will therefore be mobbed. Let’s hope it’s worth it in the end.

Salsa tonight was Sacr and was brilliant. It looks like we will be getting him for the next two weeks too. I’m looking forward to it.

A Lesson Learned – 22 November 2015

DSC_4359- blog--326Learning from the lessons of yesterday, we were up and out fairly early today to make the most of the good light. Drove to Colzium House in Kilsyth and went for a walk around the gardens. It was pretty cold and we were both well wrapped up. Heavy jacket, scarf and fingerless gloves (thanks Hazy – I kept meaning to tell you how useful they were). I think we both enjoyed the walk and it was good to see some of the autumn colours still showing through, although the trees are looking quite bare now.

Home via Lidl to pick up some veg for the dinner, then I started to unhook the old dishwasher from the water supply and the drain. That took minutes to do, but wrestling it out of the tight space it was in took a lot longer. I couldn’t work out what was holding it in place. Surely the joiners hadn’t screwed it in to the side panels when they were fitting it in with the new (ten year old) kitchen. No, it was nothing like that. It was a strip of the vinyl flooring that had become caught on the underside of the dishwasher and was locking it in place. Anyway, it’s out now and waiting to be taken away on Tuesday.

Later I went for a walk around St Mo’s to get some shots in the last little bit of good daylight. Nothing very interesting to see although I did manage to startle a couple of deer, but they were too quick for me. Caught sight of Mr Grey and grabbed a few frames of him to add to my collection.

The rest of the night was spent getting Flickr up to date. It is now. Weather station shows -0.3ºc tonight. Winter is here.

First Snow on the hills – 21 November 2015

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe day broke to a bright, if cold sky. Cold, as in -0.3ºc according to the weather station. Just below freezing. A temperature drop of nearly 25 degrees from yesterday morning according to the temperature display outside the hotel. It seemed a shame to get up and go out today in the cold, but we needed food for lunch and dinner tomorrow and we had the knowledge that the food would be better than we had to endure for the last week in the hotel. Restaurant and café food was so much better.

We dined out for lunch today at The Stables. Chicken and leek pie for me and fish and chips for Scamp. Lovely, except the barman tried to con me by trying to palm me off with coke from the dispenser rather than the bottled Coke I’d asked for. The waitress changed it for me telling me my drink was flat because there was too much ice in it! Aye Right.

Tomorrow’s dinner was bought from M&S and Lidl (top and bottom of the range). Unfortunately, I missed the good light this morning and since daylight was fading by mid afternoon, there wasn’t much choice of subject. I ended up with a mono shot of the first snow on the Campsies. A missed chance this morning.
