Halloween – 31 October 2015

combo

After a brilliant concert by Randy Newman last night and the inevitable late night, today started with a late lie in.  The concert, as I said was brilliant.  Newman’s voice in the first half was not at its best, but then he never was a great singer.  Maybe it’s just his age showing, but he seemed to be having trouble reaching some of the high notes.  In the second half he seemed more at home with the content and sang all the old faithfuls.  The night was complete for me when he sang Rednecks, premising it with a warning that it contained lyrics that might be deemed politically incorrect.  It was brilliant!

The day had started off with heavy cloud and drizzle.  It lifted a bit by midday and we set off for lunch at Vecchia Bologna in Bridge of Allan.  After that we went in to Stirling.  I wanted ink for my fountain pen and searched all the way round WH Smith’s without success.  However, as Scamp said, they had their Christmas stuff out.  Well, that makes up for everything, doesn’t it.  The stationers doesn’t have ink, but it does have the Christmas junk.  They sell Lamy pens, but they don’t sell the refills.  I think they should take a long look at themselves and decide what they are.

Had a look at some lovely paintings in one of the galleries in Stirling.  Unfortunately they also had a selection of Ron Lawson thatched cottage crap too.

Beautiful light on the old sandstone buildings and the trees when we were walking to the car.  This light morphed into a great sunset as we drove home.  By the time we got home, the light had gone and it was growing dark.

We had three sets of guisers (isn’t that a better word than trick or treaters – no competition!) at the door this year.  That’s much more than we’ve had before.

Pakora for a wee bite to eat watching ‘Strictly’.  Superb!

A dull day, but a lot done – 30 October 2015

DSC_4329-Edit- blog--303For the second day, I only have one photo to show for the past nine hours. Up at about 7.00 hungry for food after yesterday’s stomach upset emptied me out. Porridge and tea helped to fill the gap. Then it was off to the doc’s to get my flu jag. I’d been planning to make apricot croissants for Scamp because they are her favourite in Cafe Nero. Simplicity itself to make. Just ready made croissants (although I could have used puff pastry), a tin of apricots and a packet of ready-made custard. They worked perfectly first time. That must be a first for me.

I finally managed to work out how to connect the DVD recorder to the Virgin Tivo box so that I can download a set of programs to disk. Quality isn’t great and they will have to be recorded in real-time which is a bit of a pain, but it can be done on what would be down-time for the Tivo.

Went to Cotton House for lunch and then when we came back, I grabbed a half hour in St Mo’s to get today’s only decent shot.

Almost ready to go out to see Randy Newman at the Concert Hall tonight. Looking forward to it.

Hole in my Shoe – 28 October 2015

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAToday we went to Glasgow on the bus, in the rain. Scamp had booked lunch at the Ashoka in Ashton Lane. We were going to go by train, in the rain, but then I’d have to drive to the station and back again and that meant I couldn’t even have a beer with my lunch. Thank you Scottish Government. The nanny state on steroids.

Lunch was really, really excellent. First time we’d been there. I had chicken pakora and chicken bhuna. Scamp had veg pakora and saag paneer. Both were very good, but the star attraction was the naan bread. Usually these days the nan comes as chopped up pieces of a naan in a basket. I may be paranoid, but I think that leaves the door open to all sorts of possible mischief by unscrupulous restaurants. Using leftovers from a previous client springs to mind! None of that nonsense here. One big fat well fired naan, hanging on a stand dripping with ghee. Superb!! We’ll be back, all being well.

By the time we got back to Glasgow it was raining even harder. Bus back home. Thank goodness by accident they’ve changed the times of the busses in Glasgow so not all the Cumbernauld buses come at the same time. Now if you miss one, you only have to wait 15 minutes not the half an hour it used to be.

When we were walking home from the bus the rain seemed to get heavier. It was then I noticed the squeak from my left shoe an not long after that, I also noticed the wet soaking through. Good summer shoes, but not fit for walking in the rain. Such a shame.

Did I mention it rained today?

A walk in the park – 25 October 2015

comboThank goodness we had an extra hour’s sleep last night, we both needed it. Two late nights in a row does take it out of you. Scamp wanted to go for a walk and we both agreed on Glasgow Green. It’s ages since we’d been there. It hadn’t changed much, although there was a gigantic big ‘circus’ tent in the middle of the green. It turned out it was really a gigantic big ‘beer tent’, part of Oktoberfest Glasgow 2015.

We walked around the ‘Barras’ too, and that had changed quite a bit. Bill’s Tool Store was still there with everything from a needle to an anchor and everything else in between. However, only a very small percentage of the original outside stalls were still there. Yes, the “tabacca” (sic) sellers were still there and yes, the DVD sellers were there too, but where were the hawkers who sold the curtains, the carpets and the car cleaner? We went inside and it too was only half full. Some of the stallholders I remembered from the days Val and I cruised around the stalls looking for Public Domain copies of Atari and Amiga software, but very few. Loads of old faces, people who had worked the Barras every weekend. It wasn’t the same, not nearly the same. Quite a sad place now dying, but fighting all the way. There are still bargains to be had. I got the ‘gilet’ I’d been looking for with lots of pockets – you must have lots of pockets when you’ve got lots of phones. I got it for a very good price too and it was new and possibly not ‘knocked off’.

We went back over to ‘The Green’ and watched the students rowing on the Clyde. The river was full today. Single sculls, pairs, fours and eights. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many on the river.

Lunch for me was a roll ‘n’ sausage (medium rare) and for Scamp was a round of toast in The People’s Palace. Then I went for a wander round the flowers and plants in the Wintergarden. There are always photos to be had in this place, and I wasn’t disappointed today.

Used my new phone card at Tesco to put a tenner on my phone and Tesco kindly boosted that with another £20. Impressed with Tesco so far.

Google is your friend, Artists – 23 October 2015

comboI need some exercise.  All this sitting around isn’t good for anyone.  So, you guessed it, it’s gym and swim today.  I managed all the myriad of torture machines without any mishap and then just as I was getting in to the pool, the waterbabies or whatever these swimming tots are called were all leaving with their swimming proficiency badges.  The mummies and daddies and the occasional gran and grandpa were all smiling and holding their badges high.  The tots weren’t bothered in the slightest.  I think it was the prospect of lunch that got them more interested.

Painted a little when I got home after another bowl of the rather excellent Fish Stew I made yesterday.  Sorry, I completely forgot to mention the fish stew yesterday, I got so carried away with the bread.  Anyway, lunch was Fish Stew.  After that, although the sky was darkening, I was going stir crazy so I drove down to Auchinstarry and walked along the railway.  It’s ages since I’ve been along that way and I really enjoyed the walk.

When I got back Scamp was getting ready to go to the Witches sort of Halloween party which has a Tropical Theme this year.  Great excitement.

After she left, I put the finishing touches to the painting I’ve been doing for the last three days.  Just a wee sketch with watercolour washes.  Not from one of my photos this time, but from a Google Street View on Skye!!  Absolute mine of possibilities for the frustrated artist.  These were the final washes on the painting.  I’ve been trying to work wet on dry for a change with water-colour.  I think it’s working, at least I’m impressed with it.  On a completely different topic, another thing that impresses me about the new phone is the lightning connector. or more so the fact that you can plug it in to the phone upside down or right way up, in fact there is no right way, they’re both right.  Fantastic bit of planning.  Not like the USB male plug that only goes on one way round, but both sides look alike. You know what I mean, it’s just a stupid setup.  Why someone hasn’t reinvented it by now I don’t know.

Muscles and Mussels – 15 October 2015

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAFrom the title you will guess that today I joined the super fit folk in the gym to get a tour of the mysterious torture machines. So now I know about extensions, arm curls gluts, biceps and free weights. However, when I tried to leave with a conservative selection of dumbbells I was told that it wasn’t that kind of ‘free‘. I suppose it must have been free as in ‘free speech‘ and not as in ‘free beer‘. I never did understand that, but then again, I’ve never seen a sign for free beer either, and is there such a thing as free speech? Anyway, the gym/swim thing went well, except that instead of doing leg extensions, my program actually had leg curls. Confused? Yes, I think these machines are designed to confuse the unwary. Anyway, I did my reps and completed my circuit with timed cooldown. I hope you’re impressed JIC. I can talk your language now, but with a Scottish accent. The gym instructor was telling me that the gym is getting an upgrade in December and they will have bikes with video screens so you can cycle on mountain passes and along a beach at sunrise. I don’t think she was impressed when I said “Oh, just like a Wii then?” Ahem, perhaps not then.

Other than the gym, I didn’t do much. Scamp on the other hand was a busy little bee, working, exercising and in between, arranging a week in the sun for us. I’m so glad she does it. I know it’s a pain in the arse for her, sitting in a travel agent’s shop listening to all the crap for an hour or so and I do appreciate the sacrifice she makes. So, we’re booked and I’m looking forward to it already!

SInce she wasted her afternoon at the travel agent, I thought it only right and proper that I should make the dinner and it turned out very well even if I might say so myself, despite a little frisson of fear as I was serving it up. Today’s dinner was Simple Fish Stew and what could go wrong there I hear you say. Well, it wasn’t until I was serving up that I read the ingredients on the fish stock packet and noticed the following: ‘May contain molluscs and crustaceans’. Oops, having a severe allergic reaction to mussels (mollusc) I was a bit on edge for the next hour or so, waiting for the itch in my oxters (another lovely Scottish word) and other uncomfortable places. Thankfully the itch never appeared, so it looks as if it will be safe have the rest of the soup/stew tomorrow for lunch. By the way, it was delicious. Fish twice this week!

Angels, Markets and Parties – 3 October 2015

comboWe went to Angel to meet JIC and Sim. All organised and planned by Hazy and ND’A (thanks again folks). After a bum steer with a dodgy looking Indian/Mexican dive and finding a tank in the process(!), finally settled on Jamie’s Italian restaurant and had an enjoyable lunch (Italian sausage and pappardelle for me). Then went for a walk around a small market we’d visited before with Hazy. Some strange things for sale there. Numerous stalls selling spoons and fish-knives(‘?’ again) and other things that will not be mentioned for fear of nightmares – just don’t ask! Some beautiful opportunities for photos in the low afternoon light, especially with the 9mm and 20mm lenses. After that JIC and Sim went for their train and we did the same. Scamp was in a bit of a rush to get back to Hazy’s, to make sure we’d be ready for the party. I’d rather have had a wander around Kings Cross, or even better Vauxhall. I really want to have a go at photographing those riverside buildings. They are quite a favourite of mine, but obviously not as good as the one on Ingram Street in Glasgow. We agreed to disagree on timings and I left Vauxhall for another day. I need more practise anyway, to do them justice. Got some more photos of grapes in Hazy and ND’A’s garden. Then it was time for the party.

In the usual D’A style, this was a party not to be missed. Food, drink, dancing, speeches, laughs. These people really know how to enjoy themselves. It took my breath away the first time I met them and seemed too good to be true. It’s not. It’s just the way they are, and they are an object lesson for the rest of us. I admire them in so many ways. Anyway, we all had a great time and although Hazy didn’t stay long, I’m sure she too had a good time. When it was time for the last dance I was so disappointed, I hadn’t noticed the time passing. After we helped clearing up the hall, ND’A drove us home and we had to get ourselves organised for the journey back up the road.

A short trip, but a lot crammed in.

As I said, “… I need more practise anyway, to do them justice.”

Scooting around Stirling – 19 September 2015

ComboWe both agreed that Bridge of Allan would be our destination today and we’d lunch at Vecchia Bologna. We had a quick walk through the town. Quite a pretty little town but with ideas above its station if you get my drift. However, lunch was excellent as usual. I don’t think we’ve ever had a poor lunch in this restaurant. From there, we went to Stirling. Scamp needed new shoes and M&S had a sale on. I managed to get myself a cheap Casio watch to replace the Decathlon one that fell to bits last week. Yes, I did get the battery replaced on the Pulsar, but the battery has been replaced three times since I bought the watch and it’s no longer waterproof, so I can’t wear it when swimming, so the cheap Casio is a decent every day watch and I can keep the Pulsar for dressed up occasions. We watched an old guy in Stirling regaling a street preacher and starting an argument with him. Street entertainment I’d describe it as. Went to Waitrose in Stirling and lo and behold, they had Adnams beer which I’d sampled when we were at JIC and Sim’s. They also had a nice bottle of Aberlour 12 yo whisky!

On the way home we chanced upon, for the third time today, the Lambretta Club outing and this time we stopped to take photos. An amazing variety of scooters in a every stage of degradation. From pristine Concours d’ Elegance to virtual rustbuckets. Some fairly new and a lot that were quite ancient with everything in-between. After checking when I got home, I was quite surprised at the money that’s tied up in these scooters.

Still, an interesting day and an excellent lunch. Tagliatelle with Spinach and Salsiccia for me. The usual Spaghetti del Chef for Scamp.

Piaggios, Peace and a Pint – 18 September 2015

combo2It was a cloudy, disappointing start to the day, but by 9.15 it had brightened up and I was dressed, the bike was on the rack and the rack was on the car and I was off. Drove to Auchinstarry and intended to cycle to Kirkintilloch. I got to Dumbreck and decided to have a rest and watch the world go by, because other people, not as lucky as me were starting their working day. Then I heard a strange engine note from a plane. I spotted it coming over Barr Hill and, yes, it had pusher propellors and the tiny winglet on the nose of a Piaggio. I’d never seen one flying before and only seen a static in Genoa airport this summer. I didn’t have time to grab my camera out of the bag and change the lens, so I settled for just watching it. I remember reading an interview in Photo Technique with (maybe) Annie Leibovitz away back in the 1970s. In the article she said that she looked forward to a time when she wouldn’t want to photograph a scene, but would be happy to simply see it. That’s what I did today. After that, time stood still for a while and I just took some photos. Some with the Panasonic 45-200 and some with the new toy 9mm. A really relaxing morning, as if I needed to relax. There was a time when I really needed chill time. A time when I was tightly wound up. Not so much now, but it’s still good to just sit. That’s a definition of meditation – Just Sitting. Cycled back along the canal, hoping to catch a glimpse of the kingfisher that lives along this stretch, at least used to live along here. I think it must be about three years ago since I’ve seen it. Home for lunch – Corned Beef Sandwich. Very salty and obviously bad for you, because it tastes so good covered with brown sauce. Healthy eating has its place, but so does a corned beef sandwich. Spent a happy hour or so reading on the front step with a cup of peppermint tea. The healthy option. We needed milk, so when Scamp came back from the gym, we walked down to the M&S shop at the garage and dropped in at the Broadwood on the way home. Me for a pint of Guinness and Scamp for a G&T. Weather not so good again, clouding over, but the Weather Fairies say it will be good tomorrow.

We’ll see.

Perth – 16 September 2015

comboOff to Perth today. Poor weather predicted, but aside from some misty, foggy stuff before we left, it looked good. Arrived in Perth in sunshine too. I’d broken my favourite watch’s strap on Monday and I wasn’t totally happy with the substitute watch I’d found. Last night I searched for and found my old Pulsar which has a metal bracelet, so that’s not going to break very easily. Unfortunately it needed a battery, so on my list of to-dos today was a battery for said watch. Scamp recommended Timpsons for the replacement. I eventually found Timpsons shop in Perth more by dead reckoning than by using my iPhone which couldn’t get a 3G signal in the centre of the town. All the phone companies are busy offering 4G-ready phones. Not much use when there’s not even a 3G mast nearby. Maybe it would be ok in Engaland (sic), but in Scotland it’s a no-no. Anyway, the nice man in Timpsons changed two batteries, yes TWO, one for the digital side and one for the analog apparently. I could say that he did it in double quick time, but that would be a pun too far 🙂 It’s a heavy watch, but at least I can read it without peering at it and the strap won’t come apart very easily. Sorted!

Lunch at Café Tabou was good, but the service, for once, was very poor. If this had been our first time at this restaurant, I don’t think we would have been back. The waitress made the excuse that one of the cooks was off and she hadn’t been able to get a replacement. What she really meant was the check had got missed in the kitchen. It happens. She did give us a discount on the bill which more than made up for the wait. Which reminds me, I had emailed Zizzi head office about the pulled pork pizza with the invisible pulled pork and yesterday I got a £30 voucher and an apology. Squeaky wheel … grease. Next on the list is an email to Vodafone about the service at their Glasgow shop. Maybe I’ll get a free iPhone 6s for my trouble!

Took some photos in Perth round about the bridge over the river and then stopped on the way home I took some more of the corn fields just outside Blackford. The 9mm lens makes beautiful skies.

Salsa at night, but our usual teacher still wasn’t back from his sojourn to Engerland (sic again – and I was). Teacher was dire. Luckily there were too many men and I managed to exempt myself from the proceedings and sat out the first class. Scamp called it a day after that class and we went home. Let’s hope JG is back on Monday.
