It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day – 1 January 2016

combo bA late start after a late night yesterday.  Typical of New Year’s Day.

Kippers for lunch that kept reminding me of their presence all day after that, despite a couple of cups of peppermint tea.

Went for a walk round St Mo’s with Scamp. Tried to feed the ducks, but it was the gulls and the swans that got most of it. I’m not sure Scamp enjoyed the walk, but she didn’t complain too much.

After the walk, I made Carrot and Cardamom soup from my new Nigel Slater book, thanks Hazy and ND’A. Then made bread for dinner tonight. Both of them were very tasty. Steak for dinner with brussels, cauliflower and roast potatoes. For Scamp’s dinner, substitute salmon for the steak. Coffee afterwards was the Christmas coffee blend Jic and Sim brought me. Very nice, better in my opinion than the Guatemalan, although I will of course have to compare them again in the next few days. Thanks to you two too. So, it was a family New Year’s meal, with everyone represented. Just as it should be.

Rain – 30 December 2015

combo bUp at 6.00am to see Jic and Sim on their way back down south through the wind and rain that was with us all night last night. After they left, we went back to bed for another snooze for an hour or three before heading off to Falkirk to fight our way through the supermarket to get enough food to see us through the next two days.

On the drive home I stopped at Underwood Lock on the Forth and Clyde Canal to get some photos. Thankfully the rain had eased a bit and I got two of the shots I had planned. Then I saw a couple walking their dog and grabbed that shot too. I imagine there are a lot of possible shots in the old burned out restaurant, but as the roof has fallen in and the entire site is enclosed behind heavy duty fencing. The fencing doesn’t really bother me, but the thought of the roof falling in on me does, so I think I’ll take more shots, but from the outside only.

That was it for the day. The light had gone, and so had we. We went home.

Christmas Eve Eve – 23 December 2015

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAToday we went to try out the new gym.  We were both impressed with the new setup.  Lots of new machines, some of them a bit more video game than serious training devices.  All very shiny and nice to see screens that could display a tv picture without it looking as if it was being viewed through a snow storm.  Time will tell how well they last.  Swimming was out because the pool was slightly oversubscribed, but the sauna, the steam room and the jacuzzi were very welcome.

Went for lunch at Milano.  By the look of the carpark, I thought we wouldn’t have a hope of getting a table, but we did.  Maybe because we only needed a table for two.  It was quite busy with lots of Christmas parties.

After we left, we went to Muirhead hoping to get a steak for my Christmas dinner, but the queue outside the butcher’s meant it would be a long wait just to get inside and then another queue inside the shop.  No, there are limits to what I’ll put up with for my dinner.  I’d rather have a veggie Christmas dinner than wait in a chilly queue for some meat.  As it was, we went to Tesco and I have a nice bit of steak for my Christmas dinner.  It may not be as good as the butcher’s steaks, but then again I didn’t have to queue either.

I wrote a couple of cards for Ivan and for Peter H when we came home and walked over to Condorrat and just managed to catch the post.  Got a few photos of cars on the M80 some time exposures and some with as fast a shutter speed as I could manage with the light level available.  Blended them in Potatoshop and that will have to do as POD for today.

The Shortest Day – 22 December 2015

combo bMaybe we spend too much time looking at glowing screens.” I heard this while I was listening to a podcast coming back from another walk to Dumbreck Marshes.  I couldn’t agree more.  We all spend far too much time in this virtual reality we live so much of our lives in.

Before my Damascene revelation today, we went to Stirling, to shop and stock up for Christmas at Waitrose.  It was just in case the snow comes in great drifts in the next few days and we can’t struggle our way across the tundra to Condorrat to buy the last loaf of bread in the bakers.  Yes, I know the temperature is almost in double figures today, but you never know, do you?

On the way back we stopped at Halfords to get the headlight bulb replaced in my car.  I could have done it myself, but I couldn’t remember the sequence for removing the clips and bolts, well, that’s my excuse.

After we got back, I went out to have my religious conversion and Scamp went to do more shopping, this time in Glasgow.  When I got back, I stared at these ‘glowing screens’ again to get the photos downloaded and processed and then get this blog written.  We need the glowing screens, but I dare say we could use them a little less.

I saw the sun today – 20 December 2015

combo bToday we woke to sunshine.  Real sunshine from a blue sky with little pink clouds.  After half an hour, the pink clouds had turned gold as the sun rose a bit higher in the sky.  Amazing.  It didn’t last of course.  An hour later the rain was torrential – but the sun was still shining!  It wasn’t a sun shower though, the rain went of for a full 15minutes without relenting and the sun still shone.  Then, just as the sun disappeared behind the grey clouds we’ve become accostomed to, the rain stopped.  Strange weather.  At least the rain stayed off for most of the day after that although the clouds stayed, always threatening more of the wet stuff.

Since Scamp had done most of the cooking yesterday for J&M, I though it was only fitting for me to ‘recycle the dishes’ as they used to say in the Fairy advert (other washing up liquids are available).  Most of the heavy lifting had been done last night by the dishwasher, it was just the garlic encrusted pans and trays and the bowl that had contained the marinade (garlic) that formed the bigger part of today’s work.  It didn’t take that long really and I felt better for doing it.

After lunch I made the decision to risk getting soaked in the hope of getting some photos over by St Mo’s.  I was just walking over to the pond when heard a loud croaking above me, and there was my old friend Mr Grey, flying in for his own lunch.  I stalked him for a few shots from the relative cover of the Scots Pine wood, but I really wanted to get some photos of him taking off and soon I got my chance.  I thought I’d got some decent shots, so set off to annoy the deer.  The deer must have heard me coming because they were all hiding.  I did find some deer hair on the ground.  I remember deer hair from using it to tie fishing flies – many moons ago.  No blood, so are the deer moulting, casting, whatever it’s called when they lose their winter coats in this strange warm, dull, damp climate we live in now.

Daylight was fading so it was time to head for home.  At the wee pond, there was Mr Grey again, so I got a few more shots of him flying off to the middle of the big pond where he knew he would be safe from my depredations.

Such a (Mr) Grey day.

A Busy Day – 19 December 2015

IMG_2981- blog--353This morning I made choux pastry for profiteroles.  Under the careful tutelage of Chef Scamp.  Such a faff, I kept asking myself was it really worth it.  It was!
While I was doing that, Scamp was filling the kitchen with the smell of garlic, was it worth it.  It was!
After that, it was time to make the bread, and adjust the texture of the dough, was it worth it. Hmm, not really – possible the worst loaf I’ve made in a long time.  Oh well, you can’t win them all.

After all that prep, it was time to go visit Dorothy.  Spent an entertaining hour with her an Colin, then drove back to more Masterchef Mysteries.  This time I was in charge of beating the cream to make the filling for the profiteroles, then the additional faff of squirting it into the choux pastry blobs.  Fiddly.  Was it worth …
After that, my kitchen chores were over for the day all but over.  Just tidying up the living room and then I could sit down while Scamp refilled the kitchen with the scent of garlic.  Vampires beware, this kitchen is off limits.

The dinner made everything worthwhile.  Starter to Coffee, it all tasted great.  Busy day, but it was a successful one.

Perf – 9 December 2015

combo bToday we went to Perth. Not Perth, Australia, but Perth, Scotland. Rather than drive there, or bus there, we decided to train. It was a lousy day. Dull, wet and windy. The train seemed to be a great idea and the trip north was very comfortable. I don’t know why they built the railway station so far out of town. Maybe the town centre was meant to be near the bus and rail station, but someone decided that a mile or so further down the road was a much more sensible situation for a town centre. Not to worry, the walk would do us good.

The main reason for the trip was to get more coffee and a Chrissy Prezzy for me. I was allowed to choose it, but after we got home it had to go to Santa until the 25th. After the purchases we went to The George for lunch: Fish & Chips (x2). It was lovely. By the time we came out it was just after 1.00pm and you could already see it was getting dark. I got some photos of some statuary near the river. After that we fought through the wind and rain on our way back to the station, only to find out we had a 45min wait for the train. A 45min wait on a metal seat next to a couple of joiners who were building a wooden box about two metres long by one meter wide by two metres high. I think it may be a waiting room, a new concept in Perth Railway Station. Even the dismal 1950s bus station waiting room is luxurious compared to Perth Railway Station’s waiting facilities: a metal bench that seats four. Food for those waiting is catered for by a drinks vending machine and a chocolate vending machine – superb! The station does have a sign saying ‘Welcome’, but that’s where the welcome ends.

Thankfully the journey home was quite excellent. Just under an hour for the entire journey from Perth Railway Station to Home. Scary though. Not the journey, but the amount of water that was passing by the windows of the train. So much water. Flooding everywhere from Perth to Stirling. It’s then you realise how lucky we are to live on a hill.

Just a Friday – 27 November 2015

combo2Drizzly rain all day today.  Sorted out the hazel problem first thing.  It was actually sorted last night, well the programming was sorted, it was just the putting into practise that needed to be done today.  Made some bread after that and kept back a pizza sized piece for my dinner tonight.  Scamp was going out for her retirement lunch so it was just dinner for one.

Scamp’s radio which she uses in the mornings wasn’t working and although I had jury rigged a solution of sorts, I decided to get her a new one for the five working days she still needs one for.  First I took her to the restaurant and then I went for a swim.  No gym today, my ankle is too sore.  The pool was brilliant.  Much warmer than the pool in the hotel in Tenerife!  Took in a trip to the sauna and the steam room too.  One girl in the steam room was complaining that there was a lot of steam in the room, she thought it should be dry.  The OTHER   fitness centre she went to had a hot room without all that steam.  I explained to her that the sauna was next door and this was a steam room.  Her next complaint was that the seats were too hard.  Why didn’t they have cushions.  Apparently OTHER fitness centres have soft seats in their hot rooms.  I left her to her complaints.

The first full day – 14 November 2015

comboThis morning we woke to a sky that was partly cloudy, but this didn’t worry us as we knew the sun would burn away the cloud and pretty soon it did and left blue sky all around. Breakfast was the usual holiday affair and as usual I ate too much.  I think I had too much sugary stuff and suffered for it for a while. After breakfast Scamp wanted to get some basic housekeeping done – pool towels, safe key and we decided we’d have the €3 per day drinks package for dinner only. The one complaint I have about the hotel is the cost of drink. €1.70 for 200 ml of beer is a bit heavy when you consider that at a cafe across the road we can get 500ml for €1.50!  Anyway, we took the drinks package.  We already had a little bar set up in the room, the beer cost was an incidental.

After we got the house keeping out of the way, we sat poolside for an hour or so, but with noisy foreign neds and the kiddies club nearby, it was not that comfortable, so we did what we’d intended to do and went exploring. We walked down to the front and walked right (we’d walked right last night) along the promenade.  It was quite windy, in fact very windy at times.  Took lower path back and had a beer (cheap beer) and a bowl of chips in a wee bar.  Walked back and bought more drinks for the room bar.  Snooze for me when we got back and reading for Scamp.  Explored the level 5 pool later and I got another sketch done.  Now it’s time for dinner.

Dinner was ok. Still the same stramash,  like an unruly school dinnerhall. I was a bit more circumspect today but the rice pudding with cinnamon is lovely.

The entertainment tonight is dancing dogs. I kid you not!  Scamp made the corporate decision not to go yesterday when we heard.  yesterday’s group was bad, but dancing dogs is a new low. No firm plans for tomorrow, but I think level 5 pool will have a starring role.

The Pink Guitar – 11 November 2015

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe day started with a final attempt to cover the rogue canvas in glory, if not paint. I took Scamps advice and ditched the greens and greys and went ahead with bright reds and oranges. I also did most of the work with a painting knife rather than brushes. A much better, looser result. Not brilliant, but an improvement on what was there before.

Today we went to Glasgow to buy a new dishwasher. Nothing fancy, just a simple machine that will wash dishes without bells or whistles. I don’t really care, just as long as it does its job and protects me from washday red hands.

Had lunch in Pulcinella and although the service was slow, the food was good, and that’s what matters. Coffee in Cafe Nero later, then we had to pay the exorbitant parking in the Concert Hall. I only wanted to park, not buy the building.

Getting ready to batten down the hatches for the first storm of winter tomorrow. Oh what fun.
